Enoch Nkwe on Heinrich Klaasen: The whole thing is not as straightforward as it might look

Wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen was not named among the 18 players contracted by Cricket South Africa for the 2025-26 season last month.

Batsmen Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller were given hybrid contracts. This will effectively allow them to participate in domestic T20 leagues around the world instead of representing South Africa.

The 33-year-old Klaasen is currently with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League and will be with the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket in the United States of America next month.

Klaasen has retired from Test cricket. He hasn’t formally retired from ODI and T20I cricket.

“We’ve been having all sorts of discussions and he’ll come back to us on the way forward. I can’t go into detail at the moment, I can only do so once it’s been finalised,” said Cricket South Africa director of national teams and high performance Enoch Nkwe.

“There’s obviously a lot to look at. There’s the T20 World Cup next year, the 2027 Cricket World Cup, there’s his age – so the whole thing is not as straightforward as it might look. We’ve looked at every single element to this situation, from a contract point of view.

“The hybrid contracts take into consideration the dynamic nature of modern-day cricket and will provide David and Rassie with the opportunity to contribute to the team during specific bilateral tours and International Cricket Council events.”

Fast bowlers Kwena Maphaka and Lizaad Williams – and all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy – have been contracted for the first time by CSA.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder, wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne and batsman David Bedingham previously received contract upgrades – and have been retained.
