Former Proteas batsman Herschelle Gibbs has compared Paarl Royals opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius to former New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder.
Pretorius is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing SA after half-centuries against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town. He is 18 years old.
“Just an observation on Luan-dre Pretorius – he has a lot of Jesse Ryder in him and, funnily enough, built like him too. But a talent nonetheless,” said Gibbs on social media.
Ryder played 18 Tests, 48 ODIs and 22 T20Is from 2008 to 2014. Gibbs and Ryder’s international careers coincided for two years.
Earlier this month, England captain Ben Stokes praised Pretorius. Stokes had been signed by MI Cape Town, but was later ruled out of the SA20 due to injury.
“One of the many things franchise cricket has done is give young/inexperienced but incredibly talented players opportunities on the biggest stage against the best in the world and show off how good they are. Lhuan-dre Pretorius is doing that right now,” said Stokes.
