India were bowled out for the joint 18th lowest total in the history of Test cricket on day one of this week’s series opener against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant top-scored with 20 in a final total of 46 all out. Five batsmen, including former captain Virat Kohil, collected ducks. New Zealand seamer Matt Henry took five wickets.

This is India’s lowest total in Test cricket in India. Their previous lowest Test total, in India, was 1987’s 75 all out against the West Indies in Delhi.

The total is also India’s third lowest in Test cricket globally. Their second lowest is 1964’s 42 all out against England at Lord’s. Their lowest is 2020’s 36 all out against Australia in Adelaide.
