South Western Districts have appointed assistant coach Jason Maswanganyi ahead of South Africa’s 2023-24 domestic season.

Maswanganyi has succeeded former SWD assistant coach Gurshwin Rabie, who was promoted to head coach earlier this year.

Maswanganyi worked with SWD previously before leaving for Easterns.

“It will be Maswanganyi’s second stint with the Badgers after he was employed by the Oudtshoorn-based affiliate between 2018 until 2021,” read a statement from SWD.

“During that period, he coached the SWD Under-19 and Academy teams. Maswanganyi has a very good understanding of the structures and expectations of the Badgers.

“The 35-year-old Maswanganyi, who hails from Alexandra in the East Rand, was employed as the Academy and Colts team coach at Easterns in Benoni since 2021.

“He was previously also employed as a development coach at Gauteng.”

SWD compete in division two of South African domestic cricket. They recently recruited former Boland duo Khwezi Gumede and Ruan Terblanche – and spinner Thomas Kaber from Border.

All-rounder Kelly Smuts has rejoined SWD from Northern Cape. All-rounder Sean Whitehead and seamer Basheer Walters have left SWD for the Warriors and Northern Cape, respectively.

“We are delighted to have Jason back in our midst. He will be joining the coaching staff under the helm of Gurshwin Rabie and together with the strength and conditioning coach, Tyler Easton, we are confident that they as a unit will take the Badgers to new heights,” added SWD chief executive officer Albertus Kennedy.
