Western Province have retained leg-spinner Josh Breed in the squad for Tuesday’s T20 Challenge against Boland in Paarl.

Breed completed figures of zero for 23 in three overs – and hit 11 not out, including the winning runs – on T20 debut for Western Province against North West at Newlands in Cape Town last week.

Prior to the match, he received his maiden Western Province T20 cap from former Claremont Cricket Club team-mate Matthew Elsworth.

“Receiving that cap was so special. I mean, Matthew, who gave me my cap, I’ve known him now for 10 years, and he was a senior player at Claremont when I joined,” said Breed, who is Claremont Cricket Club’s captain in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league.

“I got to skip for him, and he’s been one of the most supportive people in my journey. So, when I heard he was coming down, that was quite emotional, but it was awesome.”

Breed has been included in Western Province’s squad for the 4-Day Domestic Series season, but not yet debuted in first-class cricket. His List A debut for WP had come against the Warriors in Port Elizabeth in March 2025.

“I was super excited. I’ve been speaking to coach Rory Kleinveldt a lot about potentially playing, so I felt like I was well prepared,” added Breed.

“I’d done quite a lot of white-ball preparation, so I was nervous the first ball that I bowled and the first ball that I faced, but after that the nerves settled and it was good fun.”
