Spinner Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out of South Africa’s second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Maharaj sustained a groin injury during the series opener. He had captained the Proteas in the absence of the injured Temba Bavuma.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder will captain the team in the absence of Maharaj. Mulder will become the country’s 18th Test captain since 1992.

Spinner Senuran Muthusamy has been added to the squad as cover for Maharaj.

The Proteas will be without fast bowler Lungi Ngidi as well.

“Ngidi, who was set to join the squad on Wednesday, has been released to give the seamers who impressed in the first Test another opportunity to build on their performances,” read a statement from Cricket South Africa.
