CSA confirm Knights remain relegated ‘in the best interest of cricket and the country’ after mediation

Cricket South Africa have confirmed the Knights remain relegated to division two after this week’s mediation.

The Knights finished below the Warriors on the cumulative points table for first-class, List A and T20 cricket at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Warriors ended in second-last position after losing points for failing to field enough black African players during a One-Day Cup fixture against the Dolphins. While the points were docked, the Warriors’ win over the Dolphins was upheld. The Knights contested this decision.

“On 5 June 2025, the dispute between Cricket South Africa and the Free State Cricket Union (FSCU) was subjected to mediation,” read Friday’s statement from CSA.

“The dispute has been resolved on the basis that in the best interest of cricket and the country, FSCU acknowledges that it will not participate in division one for the 2025-26 season. Rather than incurring further legal fees, the union has resolved to allocate the available resources toward the development of cricket within the region.

“This strategic focus aims to enhance the standard of play locally and improve team performance, thereby increasing the likelihood of future promotion back to division one.

“CSA appreciates the professional and constructive manner in which the FSCU has engaged in the mediation process. CSA commends the Union for prioritising the best interests of the game and extends its best wishes for their continued efforts to achieve promotion back to division one.”

Meanwhile, the Knights have lost all-rounder Dian Forrester and batsman Lesego Senokwane to North West and the Titans, respectively.
