South Africa’s Kyle Verreynne hit an unbeaten century on day one of Nottinghamshire’s County Championship, division one, fixture against Essex.
Verreynne moved to 128 not out from 242 balls, including 16 fours, at Trent Bridge on Saturday. This is his first innings in the 2025 County Championship.
This is Verreynne’s 15th century in first-class cricket. His 14th was for Western Province against Boland at Newlands in Cape Town late last month.
Verreynne collected 248 runs in four innings for Nottinghamshire in 2024. This included 148 not out against Warwickshire.
His first-class average for Nottinghamshire is currently 376.
“This century means a lot to me. I was here last year and I wanted to get back into things this year,” said Verreynne.
“Last year’s century against Warwickshire, we were in a strong position. Obviously all tons mean a lot, but I think that one meant a little bit less. Here, we were in a bit of trouble and it took a lot of toil – I think it meant a lot to the team.
“I was a bit nervous on 99, but before that, in the 90s I was calm. The pitch played as expected in the early England summer. I am happy that I prepared well and played well here.
“Essex bowlers Jamie Porter and Sam Cook were relentless, Shane Snater as well. It was one of my tougher centuries I have scored.”
Verreynne has hit four Test centuries – and will likely be named in South Africa’s XI for June 2025’s World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s in London.
Several other South Africans are involved in this season’s County Championship, including batsman David Bedingham at Durham and seamer Dane Paterson at Middlesex. Seamer Keith Dudgeon is playing for Kent.
