Langa Cricket Club have been added to the Western Province Cricket Association premier league.
Earlier this year, the WPCA local leagues committee’s recommendations – largely governed by Cricket South Africa’s transformation objectives – urged that a so-called ‘black African’ club join Brackenfell Cricket Club – and the 10 others – in the premier league.
Brackenfell Cricket Club had left the Boland Cricket Board for the Western Province Cricket Association in order to comply with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee’s geo-political boundaries.
Langa Cricket Club were in contention with Gugulethu Cricket Club and Khayelitsha Cricket Club for the final premier league berth – and will not be relegated, regardless of their log position at the end of the 2017-18 season.
According to the first draft of fixtures for the 2017-18 WPCA season, Langa Cricket Club will open their campaign against the University of the Western Cape Cricket Club. Their first home match will be against reigning champions Bellville Cricket Club.
Proteas cricketers Temba Bavuma and Thami Tsolekile – and franchise star Malusi Siboto – have played for Langa Cricket Club.
Promoted from the first division A, Milnerton Cricket Club and Victoria Cricket Club, meanwhile, have replaced the demoted St Augustine Cricket Club and Primrose Cricket Club in the premier league.
