They’ll look to make some big buys later, he says. That, pretty much, is the Bulls’ benefit of having a current WPCA premier league cricketer on the coaching staff.

6:59pm: Tournament sponsor Punit Balan, District Sixers Duminy owner, Atlantic Pirates owner Philander have said their bits. Almost time for the auction.
6:55pm: Now Ziyaad Desai gets a turn with the microphone. He’s the tournament founder, having established the Lenasia Premier League in Johannesburg – and later the Dolphins Premier League in Durban. He is quick to tell everyone he scored a first-class century back in the day, but didn’t have the opportunity to strike another because of a lack of pipeline and development. He has introduced this tournament to create such paths, he insists.
6:52pm: WPCA president Beresford now has the microphone. Plenty of words on the go. So much appreciation for all involved in the organisers of the tournament. It’s sincere enough.
6:46pm: Western Province Cricket Association chief executive officer Nabeal Dien is leading the opening speeches. He says the tournament will involve women’s cricket next year. He also “confidently” reckons there will be 10 men’s teams in 2020. “Hard luck to naysayers,” he concludes.

5:48pm: The auction will start in about 40 minutes’ time. Meanwhile, the President’s Suite is filling with all and sundry involved in this maiden event.
4:11pm: The auction is scheduled to start at 6:30pm, but there will probably be plenty of preamble before the business end of proceedings commence.
4:07pm: There were some late additions to the auction list. See the 14 belated inclusions here.
4:02pm: The head and assistant coaches were announced earlier this week. Find out who they are here.

3:50pm: Welcome to Club Cricket SA’s live coverage of the player auction for the inaugural Cape Premier League, which will be played in April 2019.
