MI New York name Robin Peterson head coach for Major League Cricket

MI New York have named former Proteas spinner Robin Peterson head coach for this year’s inaugural edition of Major League Cricket in the United States of America.

Peterson worked with the Mumbai Indians franchise during the inaugural SA20 earlier this year. He was MI Cape Town’s director of cricket.

MI have signed South African duo Kagiso Rabada and Dewald Brevis alongside several other international stars, including West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard, Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, Australian batsman Tim David and more.

“We are thrilled to unveil team MI New York in the upcoming Major League Cricket season,” said Mumbai Indians franchise owner Akash Ambani.

“It is an extraordinary line-up of youth, experience, and power. Combined with the exceptional skills of our local US players, we are confident that MI New York will raise the bar of competition in the cricket ecosystem of the US.

Other South Africans in MLC

Peterson, Brevis and Rabada are among several South Africans involved in MLC. Former Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn was recently appointed Washington Freedom bowling coach.

Proteas pair Marcus Jansen and Anrich Nortje have been signed by Washington. All-rounder Wayne Parnell and wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock will be with the Seattle Orcas. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has joined the San Francisco Unicorns.

The first season of MLC is scheduled for 13 to 30 July 2023.
