Western Province Cricket Club’s Derek Mitchell won the inaugural Western Cape Super Cricketer Competition, hosted at Green Point Cricket Club on 13 September 2015.
In an all-WPCC final, Mitchell defeated Kyle Schreuder in a relatively one-sided final in front of a 300-strong crowd.
Schreuder and Mitchell had earlier enjoyed semi-final triumphs over Durbanville Cricket Club’s Jaco Castle and Nathan Swartz, respectively.
Jethro Hill of Tygerberg Cricket Club, Yusuf Keets of Blue Bells Cricket Club, Firaaz Booley of Primrose Cricket Club and Charl Cyster of Boland Cricket Academy were the losing quarter-finalists.
The hard-hitting Mitchell also clinched the accolade for the biggest six of the tournament – a massive blow over midwicket in the second semi-final – and Castle cherished some consolation as the opening round’s top-scorer.
The 32-man contenst featured intriguing adaptations to the traditional game, including 10-delivery innings, neutral fielders and so-called ‘electric’ wickets.
