Western Province head coach Salieg Nackerdien resigned earlier this week.
Nackeriden was in the role for four years – and has resigned to become head coach of Tanzania.
“I think whoever is coming in must build on what we have done in the the last couple of years. There are a lot of things we can still improve on. Having someone new and fresh ideas, having someone younger than me, can be a positive thing,” said Nackerdien.
“There are always high expectations at Western Province. We all know that from the past. Whoever is going to take the lead, they must build a big base of players for the longevity of Western Province cricket.
“We have managed to get some good structures in place, to get players on board and to play consistent cricket. We got players to understand the bigger picture in terms of winning trophies and we got guys to get their game in order to move to the next level.
“It will be the start of a new cycle. I think if we sign properly, we will have proper seasons for the next year or two.”
Western Province won the 2023-24 One-Day Cup title, division one, during Nackerdien’s tenure. This season, though, they ended the One-Day Cup, division one, points table in last position.
“This time it was disappointing this season, to be honest. We can say we kept making the same mistakes all over again. We had games in control and then lost the plot and couldn’t get over the line by playing commonsense cricket,” added Nackerdien.
Western Province will name Nackerdien’s successor later this year. Former Proteas all-rounder Justin Kemp and former franchise batsman Qaasim Adams were on Nackerdien’s coaching staff.

Qaasim Adams.
Western Province Cricket Association CEO Corrie van Zyl said: “Replacing Salieg will not be easy as his skill in managing people is rare. We wish Salieg and his family all the best in this new and exciting chapter in their lives.
“We will advertise the head coach position in due course and will announce the new appointment once a suitable candidate has been identified.”
