WPCA ‘disappointed but understand’ as Newlands loses West Indies T20I in January 2026

South Africa’s T20I series against the West Indies in January 2026 has been reduced.

The series was originally scheduled to include five T20Is. This has been changed to three.

Buffalo Park in East London and Newlands in Cape Town’s T20Is have been removed.

“The decision follows the International Cricket Council’s confirmation of the commencement date for the T20 World Cup 2026,” read a statement from Cricket South Africa

As a result, the T20I series has been revised to three matches in order to accommodate the adjusted international calendar.”

Western Province Cricket Association chief executive officer Corrie van Zyl added: “We are disappointed that Newlands Cricket Ground will no longer host a Proteas versus West Indies fixture as originally planned.

“But we understand the need to accommodate the ICC’s updated tournament calendar and the associated support period for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

“Newlands has a proud tradition of hosting world-class international cricket and we remain committed to providing a premier venue experience for players, fans, and stakeholders.

WPCA will continue to engage proactively with CSA to ensure future opportunities for international content in Cape Town.”
