Former Lions and North West wicketkeeper-batsman Nicky van den Bergh has retired from professional cricket with immediate effect.
Van den Bergh played 106 first-class matches from 2010 to 2022 – and had been named in North West’s contracted squad for the 2023-24 domestic season in South Africa.
“After an incredible decade of being fortunate enough to play professional cricket, it’s time to hang up the boots,” said van den Bergh.
“While there are too many people who played an immense role in my career to name everyone, it would be wrong not to thank a few of them now.
“While the transition has been quite time consuming, I will do my utmost to get around to thanking each one personally at some stage.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to carry on with North West as the chief commercial officer and really look forward to seeing the Dragons become a true force in South African cricket.”
Meanwhile, North West cricket services manager Solomon Meki has been appointed on a permanent basis. Meki previously held the role in an acting capacity.
“North West Cricket would like to wish Mr Meki all the best in his new appointment. We are confident that he will perform all his duties well and to the best of his abilities,” said North West Cricket chief executive officer Ismail Minty.
Meki added: “I am thankful for the faith the board has in me and for the support of Mr Minty. I look forward to taking this exciting challenge head on . It’s not only a great opportunity, but it allows for tremendous growth.”
