Lions head coach Enoch Nkwe has been appointed interim team director of the Proteas.

Nkwe’s appointment follows Cricket South Africa’s decision to not renew head coach Ottis Gibson’s contract. The head coach and team manager positions have since been dissolved – and a team director introduced.

Nkwe will occupy the interim post for South Africa’s September and October 2019 tour of India, which will comprise three T20Is and as many Tests.

“It is a tremendous honour and privilege to lead the Proteas as the interim team director. It is a special moment for me and my family and I will do my best to make a difference in this interim period,” said Nkwe.

“I am extremely excited about the challenge that lies ahead and am looking forward to meeting all players and staff. Thanks also to Cricket South Africa for giving me this opportunity and hopefully we will return from India with positive results.”

Nkwe coached the Lions to the 4-Day Franchise Series and CSA T20 Challenge titles earlier this year. He was also the head coach of the title-winning Jozi Stars during last year’s inaugural Mzansi Super League.

“We are pleased to announce Enoch as the interim team director of the Proteas for the tour to India. His appointment is as a result of his merits and balanced approach and is someone who compliments the direction that will be taken by the team going forward,” added acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl.
