Durbanville Cricket Club, Cape Cobras and Proteas batsman Janneman Malan’s contract with Leicestershire in the United Kingdom has been sidelined.
Malan was due to play for the Foxes in the T20 Blast. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic won’t allow this.
“We exhausted every avenue in trying to get Janneman into the country, but issues out of our control have gone against us on this occasion,” said Leicestershire chief executive officer Sean Jarvis.
“It is a big blow for us because everyone was looking forward to Janneman playing for us. There is some budget for a signing or two and we have identified some targets, so we will continue to work hard to add to our squad ahead of the start of Blast.”
Jarvis reiterated intention to have Malan in the squad for next year’s T20 Blast, subject to a no-objection certificate from Cricket South Africa.
“We would love to see Janneman become a Fox in the future and wish him the best over the next few months,” he added.
The right-handed Malan has played three ODIs and two T20Is. He fell for a duck on ODI debut against Australia earlier this year. His second ODI, though, brought a superb 129 not out against the Australians.
