Somerset have signed North West seamer Migael Pretorius in the 2024 County Championship.

This will be Pretorius’ second spell in the County Championship. He played for Durham in 2023.

“I’m looking forward to joining up with my team-mates in the next few weeks. I enjoyed my time in England last summer and I want to show what I can do in the first division,” said Pretorius.

“Somerset are a team with a good reputation and hopefully I can take some wickets and help them win some games in the first part of the season.”

Pretorius has been named in South Africa’s Test and T20I squad, but hasn’t yet debuted at international level. He will replace Australia’s Will Sutherland at Somerset.

Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry added: “With Sutherland becoming unavailable due to injury, we wanted to make sure that we were able to bring in a similar kind of player.

“In his time with Durham last season, Migael proved that he can perform and take wickets in English conditions.

“He is a quality player and very driven, so he will certainly add value and depth to our attack. There is a lot of cricket ahead of us, so it’s vital that we maximise the options that we have available to us.”

Earlier this month, Kent signed Warriors and South Africa A all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel.

Swanepoel has replaced Australian all-rounder Xavier Bartlett at Kent.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to join a historic county side such as Kent and to play in all formats of the English county game,” said Swanepoel.

“I hope to learn a lot while I’m here amongst a very talented squad. I spoke to former Kent overseas players before I signed and they couldn’t recommend Kent highly enough as a place to come and improve my game in English conditions.”
