Northern Cape retain Mark Charlton despite ‘numerous offers’ elsewhere

Northern Cape have retained head coach Mark Charlton for the 2023-24 domestic season in South Africa.

Charlton joined Northern Cape, who are the reigning 4-Day Domestic series division two title holders, from the Titans two seasons ago.

“Having Mark stay with the union, even though receiving numerous offers outside of the province, is a sign of hope and belief he has in our union’s mission, vision,and goals,” said Northern Cape chief executive officer Thapelo January.

“He is a very important asset to cricket in the province and we fully back him to take the Northern Cape to the next level.”

A statement from Northern Cape continued: “After being with the Heat for the past two seasons and bringing in two trophies, Mark has signed a two-year contract.

“Mark has cemented his place as not just a coach, but also as part of the Northern Cape family, and has committed to ploughing back into other programs in order to retain and polish our young talent in the province to ensure the pipeline produces talented players for first-class cricket.”

Assistant coach Deon Carolus has also been retained.

Northern Cape have lost batsman Rivaldo Moonsamy and all-rounder Kelly Smuts ahead of the 2023-24 season. Moonsamy and Smuts have returned to the Titans and South Western Districts, respectively.

Northern Cape have gained seamers Andrew Rasemene and Zakhele Qwabe from Easterns and Limpopo, respectively. Batsman Chris Britz has also joined Northern Cape from North West.
