Over-50 World Cup, day 1 wrap: SA beat India, 2 centurions for England

Six matches were played on day one of the 2023 Over-50 World Cup on Monday, 6 March.

Five of the six matches were won by the team batting first. The average first-innings total was 234.

South Africa Over-50 v India Over-50

South Africa beat India by four runs at Wynberg Cricket Club on day one of the Over-50 World Cup in Cape Town on Monday, 6 March.

Brandon Nash top-scored with 50 in South Africa’s final total of 209 for nine in 45 overs. Jamil Khan completed figures of three for 11 in seven overs for India.

Iqbal Khan top-scored with 74 not out in India’s reply of 205 for seven in 45 overs. Alan Dawson, Grant Jansen and Saleem Mukkudem took two wickets each for South Africa.

England Over-50 v Namibia Over-50

England beat Namibia by 204 runs at Western Province Cricket Club’s Wally Wilson Oval.

David Snellgrove and Steve Chapman hit 118 not out and 101, respectively, in England’s total of 307 for three in 45 overs. Isodor Titus and Trevor Britten took a wicket each for Namibia.

Melt van Schoor struck 40 not out in Namibia’s reply of 103 for eight in 45 overs. Chapman and Mohammed Fayyaz took two wickets each for England.

New Zealand Over-50 v Zimbabwe Over-50

New Zealand beat Zimbabwe by 225 runs at Cape Town Cricket Club.

Andrew Hore hit 114 in New Zealand’s final total of 308 for seven in 45 overs. Murray Goodwin completed figures of three for 31 in 3.5 overs for Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe were limited to 83 for nine in 25 overs in reply. Goodwin hit 34. John Vujnovich took three for 13 in five overs for New Zealand.

Pakistan Over-50 v Wales Over-50

Pakistan beat Wales by seven wickets at Claremont Cricket Club.

Iwan Rees top-scored with 55 in Wales’ total of 159 for nine in 45 overs. Muhammad Jaffer Qureshi completed figures of three for 27 in nine overs for Pakistan.

Asif Hamayun and Muahmmad Jawed hit 68 not out and 66 not out in Pakistan’s reply of 164 for three in 31.3 overs. Malith Madurasinghe took three for 34 in six overs for Wales.

West Indies Over-50 v Canada Over-50

West Indies beat Canada by 50 runs at Western Province Cricket Club’s Vineyard Oval.

Ishwar Maraj hit 43 in West Indies’ final total of 184 all out in 30 overs. Lincoln Mohammed took four for 40 in six overs for Canada.

Aarif Talati hit 28 in Canada’s reply of 128 for seven in 30 overs. Sunil Dhaniram too two for 17 in six overs for West Indies.

Sri Lanka Over-50 v Australia Over-50

Sri Lanka beat Australia by four runs at Green Point Cricket Club.

Ruvin Peiris hit 94 in Sri Lanka’s total of 234 for seven in 45 overs. Brett James took three for 40 in seven overs for Australia.

Richard Gabb struck 71 in Australia’s reply of 230 for seven in 45 overs. Suwanji Madanayake and Dillon Fernandez took two wickets each for Sri Lanka.
