Back in Rajasthan Royals pink and in the IPL T20 saddle,” said Upton on social media.

“Working with captain Sanju Samson and coach Kumar Sangakkara in the brand new role as ‘team catalyst’. Combining mental coaching of players, supporting the coach and leadership efforts, helping create and embed culture in this newly-formed team.

“The focus remains supporting mental wellbeing after nearly two years of security bio-bubbles for many of these players and coaches.”

Upton has previously worked with the Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils (since renamed the Delhi Capitals) in the IPL.

He coached the Sydney Thunder to Australia’s Big Bash League title in 2016 – and also worked with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.

“Being the team catalyst, Upton will play a crucial role in establishing team integration by bringing them together as a cohesive and mutually supporting unit,” read a statement from the Royals.

“And look after their mental wellbeing with the use of various mental conditioning processes and activities that aid in maintaining a healthy culture and environment, especially within the restrictions of being in a bio-bubble.”

Upton will work alongside fellow South African Rassie van der Dussen at the Royals. Van der Dussen was purchased for the approximate equivalent of R2 million at the IPL player auction earlier this year.
