Pirates Cricket Club won the 2022-23 Central Gauteng Lions premier league B time competition last week – and will pursue a second title for the season this week.
Tuesday, 21 March’s 171-run win over Randfontein Cricket Club sealed the time title for Pirates Cricket Club.
“We have broken a 21-year trophy drought by winning the CGL premier league B time competition,” read a statement from Pirates Cricket Club.
“We went unbeaten across six games with five wins and one rain-affected draw.”
What Pirates Cricket Club captain Chad Roberts said
“Our bowling unit was one of the highlights of the competition, with the highest score conceded over six matches being 235 for eight,” said Roberts.
“A game that will go down in the clubs history books was the defence of a first-innings score of 82 to bowl Alexandra Cricket Club out for 63 and secure points that would go on to make the difference between finishing first or second.
“The team has been incredible this season in terms of camaraderie and all-round commitment in all aspects of the game.”
Pirates Cricket Club target premier league A promotion, too
This week, Pirates Cricket Club will pursue another title in the CGL premier league B. If victorious over Johannesburg Cricket Club on Sunday, 2 April, Pirates Cricket Club will clinch the title and promotion to the premier league A.
“This season, the premier league A and B are contested over three formats – time, T20 and 50 overs per innings – which are weighted 25, 25 and 50 percent, respectively, toward final standings to determine promotion and relegation,” said Pirates Cricket Club.
“This is similar to what Cricket South Africa have done in division one and two at provincial level.”
