KwaZulu-Natal Inland seamer Mondli Khumalo’s mother and uncle will leave South Africa for England on Tuesday.
They will travel to Bristol to be with Khumalo, who is recovering from late last month’s assault in Bridgwater.
Khumalo is in the United Kingdom as North Petherton Cricket Club’s overseas professional.
“Team Khumalo is on the way. Mum and uncle are flying tonight and will be reunited with Mondli by mid-afternoon Wednesday,” Khumalo’s agent, Rob Humphries, wrote on social media.
“Mondli is improving every day, now able to eat a little food and his short-term memory is getting better all the time.
“Thanks to everyone so much for your support, including Marnus Labuschagne and Kyle Abbott for donating some stash.
“Tom Banton, Somerset CCC and Trade Nation for kicking things off in a big way last week but most of all, North Petherton Cricket Club and Southmead Hospital, who have been amazing.”
Khumalo underwent several operations and was in an induced coma after the attack, for which a suspect has been arrested.
“Cricket South Africa have been working hard behind the scenes to support Mondli’s family following his brutal assault,” read a recent statement from CSA.
“CSA, in co-operation with KwaZulu-Natal Inland, had engaged the department of sport, arts and culture to facilitate passports for the Khumalo family to travel to Bridgwater to be with Mondli. Following this intervention, the passports were issued to the family.”
What CSA chief executive officer Pholetsi Moseki
“CSA are deeply saddened by the unfortunate assault inflicted on Mondli, who has been a shining star in the Under-19 set-up,” said Moseki.
“We share in the Khumalo family’s pain and anguish and have consequently dedicated senior officials to offer whatever support that might be required by the Khumalo family.”
What CSA board chairperson Lawson Naidoo said
“The board of Cricket South Africa unreservedly condemns the brutal assault on Mondli. We are, however, encouraged by the quick action of the UK authorities in apprehending the suspect who committed this ghastly act,” added Naidoo.
“The board lauds the CEO and the team for working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the Khumalo family receives all the necessary support.”
