Afghanistan limited South Africa to 106 all out 33.3 overs during Wednesday’s first ODI in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
This is the Proteas’ joint seventh-lowest total in ODI cricket.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder top-scored with 52. Two other players – opener Tony de Zorzi and wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne – reached double figures.
Batsman Tristan Stubbs, all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, ODI debutant Jason Smith and tail-ender Lungi Ngidi collected ducks.
Afghanistan replied with 107 for four in 26 overs – for a six-wicket win.
South Africa played without captain Temba Bavuma, who was sidelined by illness. Batsman Aiden Markram captained the team in Bavuma’s absence.
