Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of Wednesday’s first ODI against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates.
Bavuma has been sidelined by illness. Batsman Aiden Markram will captain the team in Bavuma’s absence.
“Bavuma has been ruled out of the first ODI against Afghanistan on Wednesday, 18 September due to illness. Markram will be the stand-in captain,” read a statement from Cricket South Africa.
The Proteas and Afghanistan will meet for three ODIs in Sharjah from 18 to 22 September 2024.
“There is no doubt that tours such as these offers us this unique opportunity to provide players with international exposure in differing conditions compared to what they are used to,” said Proteas limited-overs coach Rob Walter.
“I am particularly looking forward to seeing how some of the more experienced players step up, while keeping a close eye on who can grab this opportunity and become more regular within the national set-up.”
