Cricket South Africa will announce former Proteas head coach Mark Boucher’s successors on Monday, 16 January 2023, at 10am.

Boucher resigned last year – and was temporarily replaced by interim head coach Malibongwe Maketa.

CSA have since divided the role. They will hire a Test coach – and an ODI and T20I coach.

Maketa is among the candidates for both roles.

The candidates – Walter, Conrad, Pybus, Maketa

Former Titans head coach Rob Walter is in contention, too. Walter is head coach of Central Districts in New Zealand.

South Africa Under-19 coach Shukri Conrad has also applied. He is reportedly the lead contender for the Test coach post.

Former Border, Cape Cobras, Titans, Bangladesh and Pakistan head coach Richard Pybus is in contention, too. Pybus has also been West Indies director of cricket – and is currently director of cricket at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town.

Klusener out of contention

“We were happy with our interviews. The candidates gave us a bit of a headache as we needed to see who would fit best in which format,” said CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe.

Former Proteas all-rounder Lance Klusener interviewed. His application, however, has since been withdrawn. Klusener is head coach of Durban’s Super Giants in the ongoing SA20.

“It was unfortunate that Lance pulled out, but we respect that, and we’ll continue moving forward,” added Nkwe.

“We respect the decision and he’s always been a great asset to South African cricket. We hope that in future, we can have him on board.

“We’ve had him on board before but there are other attractions that we can’t compete with. We must respect people’s decisions and desires.”
