The bulk of former Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn’s South African domestic career was spent with Northerns and the Titans. Steyn, however, played amateur and professional cricket for Western Province teams, too.
Steyn played List A and T20 cricket for the Cobras between 2011 and 2014.
His time with the Cape Town franchise was limited due to Proteas commitments, but featured appearances in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 – and semi-final and final of the One-Day Cup in 2012.
Steyn and the Cobras in the Champions League Twenty20
Steyn played for the Cobras against New South Wales, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Trinidad and Tobago in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, which was eventually dissolved in 2014.
He had previously represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad in that tournament.
Back-to-back One-Day Cup finals
The Cobras shared the One Day Cup title with the Lions in 2012 after the final was washed out twice. Steyn had taken five wickets, against the Titans, in the semi-final – and was named player of the match.
He had also featured in the final of the same competition in 2011, when the Cobras beat the Warriors. He took two wickets in that match, while fellow new-ball bowler Charl Langeveldt claimed five.
Cape Town Blitz’s top wicket-taker for two seasons
Steyn played nine matches for the Cape Town Blitz in the inaugural edition of the Mzansi Super League in 2018. He was the team’s top bowler with a dozen wickets.
The Blitz lost the final to the Jozi Stars. Steyn played eight more matches for the Blitz in the 2019 MSL. Again, he was their top bowler with 15 wickets.

Amateur Western Province Cricket Club’s Proteas professional
In 2016, Steyn made a rare appearance in club cricket. He represented Western Province Cricket Club against St Augustine Cricket Club in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league – and took five wickets at the Vineyard Oval.
