Former Proteas all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius‘ career will continue in the Lanka Premier League later this year.
Pretorius retired from Test, ODI and T20I cricket in early 2023 – and has since played in several domestic leagues around the world, including the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League and Bangladesh Premier League.
“I am shifting my focus to T20 cricket and other shorter formats for the rest of my career,” Pretorius said last year.
“Being a free agent will help me achieve the goal of being the best short format player I can be. By doing this, I will be able to have a better balance in my career and family life.”
Pretorius was signed by the Galle Marvels for $30,000 – approximately R550,000 – during Wednesday’s Lanka Premier League player auction in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Proteas batsman Rilee Rossouw, meanwhile, was acquired by the Jaffna Kings for $60,000 – approximately R1.1 million.
Rossouw, who last played for the Proteas in March 2023, was with the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League recently. He struck 211 runs in eight innings during the 2024 IPL.
This year’s Lanka Premier League will be played in July. This is the tournament’s fifth edition. Kandy are the reigning champions.
The 2024 LPL will coincide with the second edition of Major League Cricket in the United States of America. Several South Africans will be involved in this year’s MLC, including the Texas Super Kings’ Aiden Markram and Seattle Orcas’ Nandre Burger.
