Fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been named in South Africa’s squad for next month’s T20 World Cup in the United States of America and Caribbean.
Nortje, who is currently with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, was preferred to fellow fast bowlers Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi.
Nortje had not played competitive cricket for six months due to injury prior to March 2024’s return.
“Anrich has got another month before the T20 World Cup starts, no doubt that he will hit his straps,” said Walter.
“It is good to see that his speed is up. Along with playing and training he will get his feel back. We need to trust the quality of the players.
“To be fair, we’re not the only team in that position. We just need to trust the quality of the players and make sure we hit the ground running.
“The balance of the team is always conditions-related and opposition-related. I won’t say now what the balance of the team will look like. We’ll look at what’s in front of us to decide.”
Nortje, who has played 19 Tests, 22 ODIs and 31 T20Is since debuting in international cricket in 2019, was not contracted by Cricket South Africa earlier this year.
“Anrich requested he wants to focus on T20 cricket for the next few months. He is not retiring from any internationals. He will avail himself for T20 Internationals,” Cricket South Africa director of cricket Enoch Nkwe told ESPNcricinfo at the time.
“Towards the end of the year, he will look to play ODIs again. We will be monitoring him and around to help him with whatever he needs.”
