Robin Peterson: I believe in transformation

Cricket South Africa have confirmed the Knights have been relegated to division two of South African domestic cricket.

Whether the Knights remain relegated, though, will be decided later this year. They ended the cumulative points table for the 2024-25 domestic season in last position, but are disputing this with CSA.

The Warriors were penalised for not fielding enough black African players in a win over the Dolphins in the One-Day Cup earlier this season. They lost points, but not the victory. The Knights want the Warriors’ win removed.

If the win is removed, the Knights will effectively move above the Warriors on the cumulative points table.

“I can’t really comment because the matter hasn’t been settled yet with Cricket South Africa, but am I the only one? I believe in transformation – nobody says that the Warriors have played more black African cricketers than any team in the country over the four years I’ve been here,” Warriors head coach Robin Peterson told Netwerk24.

Those things are quickly forgotten, we’ve played more players of colour in starting line-ups than any other team in the country. But nobody ever mentions that fact, it depends what lens you have on.

We’re not the Lions, we’re not the Titans and we’re not Western Province, who have five or six national contracts that CSA pays for, which allows them to have bigger squads.

“When we sign, what we have is what we have and, if you take three key players, we’re screwed.”
