Rylands Cricket Club will be promoted to the 2025-26 Western Province Cricket Association premier league after effectively securing first or second position in the 2024-25 first division A.
Rylands Cricket Club currently occupy first position in on this season’s WPCA first division A points table. They have 80 points after 17 wins and three defeats.
Rylands Cricket Club are 11 points ahead of second-placed Primrose Cricket Club. Victoria Cricket Club and Pinelands Cricket Club are in third and fourth position, respectively.
“The saying goes that it takes a village to raise a child. In this case Rylands is the child or club – and it was a collective effort, not only from the players, but the executive committee and the broader club community,” the Southern Suburbs Tatler quoted Rylands Cricket Club player-coach Mujahid Behardien as saying.
Seamer Riaaz Teladia and spinner Mohammed Rahman were among the players who left Rylands Cricket Club after last year’s relegation from the WPCA premier league to the first division A.
Former United Cricket Club spinner Shaheed Abader and former Khayelitsha Cricket Club batsman Siyabonga Venge joined Rylands Cricket Club for this season.
“Stepping up to the challenge has been challenging, but made easier with players who are dedicated. Another aspect which stood out was that we did not lose many of our players despite having been demoted,” added Behardien.
“The players were committed and worked hard to achieve our objective. But the job is not done. We have two games to go, and we need to win to be crowned champions.”
Meanwhile, Yorkshire Cricket Club will be promoted to the 2025-26 WPCA first division B after effectively securing first or second position in the 2024-25 first division C.
Yorkshire Cricket Club currently occupy first position in on this season’s WPCA first division C points table. They have 67 points after 14 wins and one defeat.
Yorkshire Cricket Club are 20 points ahead of second-placed Varsity College Cricket Club. Bergvliet Cricket Club and Wynberg Cricket Club are in third and fourth position, respectively.
Last year, former Primrose Cricket Club trio Sohail Mahmoud, Qaasim Salie and David Schierhout joined Yorkshire Cricket Club.
All-rounder Raees Carr and seamer Sabir Mallie also joined from Cape Town Cricket Club and the University of the Western Cape Cricket Club, respectively.
