Batsman Steven Smith has been ruled out of Australia’s limited-overs series against the Proteas.

Smith will miss late August to mid-September 2023’s three T20Is and five ODIs in South Africa due to a wrist injury.

Batsmen Ashton Turner and Marnus Labuschagne have replaced Smith in the T20I and ODI squad, respectively.

Australia’s ODI squad will also be without seamer Mitchell Starc, who has been sidelined by a groin injury. The uncapped Spencer Johnson has replaced Starc.

“The compacted Ashes series and the World Test Championship was a heavy load for the group, and we are taking a conservative approach to the build-up to the World Cup,” said national selection panel chairperson George Bailey.

“With the World Cup the priority of the squad, it was determined on advice that it was best for Steve and Mitchell to join the group in India by which time we expect them to be fully fit and available for the Indian ODI series, plus the World Cup warm-up fixture.”

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be Australia’s captain for the T20I and ODI series.
