Former Zimbabwe Test cricketer hits ‘splendid double-century’ in South Western Districts club cricket

Former Zimbabwe Test cricketer Mark Vermeulen hit a double-century in South Western Districts club competition last week.

Vermeulen struck 205 from 145 balls, including six sixes and 32 fours, for Plettenberg Bay Pioneers Cricket Club against Pirates United Cricket Club.

“A splendid double-century by former Zimbabwean international Mark Vermeulen was the highlight of the past weekend’s SWD promotion league competition,” read a statement from South Western Districts Cricket.

Vermeulen’s heroics enabled Plettenberg Bay Pioneers (375 all out) to defeat Pirates United (261 all out) by 114 runs in a high-scoring contest in Knysna.

“With this victory, the log leaders, Pirates United, suffered their first defeat of the season after being unbeaten in five matches.”

Vermeulen played nine Tests and 43 ODIs from 2000 to 2014. He hit a Test century against the West Indies in Bulawayo in 2003.
