'Too many matches in short space of time' - CPL change format, reduce fixtures

The fixtures and venues for the 2022 Cape Premier League have been confirmed.

This season’s CPL will be played at Western Province Cricket Club and Durbanville Cricket Club.

The tournament will start on 24 September and end on 9 October.

“The reason that this format has been selected is because we have noted the concerns from various stakeholders with regards to players playing too many games in a short space of time and the need to create a festive atmosphere,” said the tournament organisers.

“Each team will play each other once in the first round of the CPL. The top four teams after round one will qualify for the semi-finals. The winners of the CPL semi-finals will earn the right to play in the final.”

The Devil’s Peak Dragons are the reigning CPL champions. They beat the Atlantic Pirates in the 2021 final. The Cape Vikings beat the Hoeri Kwaggo Bulls in the inaugural CPL final in 2019. The tournament was not played in 2020.
