Former Proteas cricketers Alviro Petersen and Garnett Kruger have been named in the Lions Over-40 squad for next month’s inter-provincial tournament in Johannesburg.
Petersen’s international career spanned nine years from 2006 to 2015.
In November 2022, Petersen hit a double-century for Glenvista Cricket Club against Bedfordview Cricket Club in the Lions Veterans Cricket Association league.
Kruger was capped three times in ODI cricket and once at T20I level in 2006.
In September 2022, Kruger played for South Africa Legends in the Road Safety World Series in India.
The 16-man squad also includes former Gauteng first-class cricketers Matthew Harris, Warren Dugmore and Solomzi Ndima – and former Easterns first-class cricketers Gareth Flusk and Johan Fourie.
May 2023s’ inter-provincial tournament will also feature former Proteas batsman Ashwell Prince, who will captain Western Province Over-40.

Over-40 inter-provincial tournament background
Wanderers Cricket Club and Old Edwardians Cricket Club will host the inter-provincial tournament, which will feature eight teams:
- Western Province Over-40;
- Boland Over-40;
- Border Over-40;
- Eastern Province Over-40;
- Dolphins Over-40;
- Titans Over-40;
- East Rand Over-40; and
- Lions Over-40.
The tournament is scheduled to start on 8 May and end on 12 May. Matches will be contested over 45 overs per innings.
South Africa will host the Over-40 World Cup in 2024. South Africa hosted the Over-50 World Cup earlier this year.
