University of the Western Cape seamer Mihlali Mpongwana and spinner Luke Philander have been named in Western Province’s squad for this week’s CSA 3-Day Cup fixture against KwaZulu-Natal in Chatsworth.
Mpongwana and Philander have been key members of the University of the Western Cape’s 2018-19 Western Province Cricket Association premier league campaign.
Neither have been capped at first-class level yet. Philander, though, made two List A and three T20 appearances for Western Province in 2017.
United Cricket Club batsman Qaasim Adams was not considered for selection due to a suspension, while Durbanville Cricket Club all-rounder George Linde and South Africa Under-19 batsman Jonathan Bird have been included.
‘It is vitally important that we score big in the first innings and set up the match in this fashion. We don’t want to play catch-up cricket,’ said Western Province coach Paul Adams.
‘In the first few matches, we scored big centuries in the first innings and recorded a win, while we were one wicket away from victory against Easterns.’
‘Jonathan has got a big presence at the crease. It is important at Western Province that we keep nurturing our pipeline.’
Squad: Andre Malan (captain, Durbanville Cricket Club), Jonathan Bird, Michael Cohen (Western Province Cricket Club), Isaac Dikgale (Victoria Cricket Club), Justin Dill (Bellville Cricket Club), Carlos Koyana (Tygerberg Cricket Club), George Linde (Durbanville Cricket Club), Renaldo Meyer (Victoria Cricket Club), Neo Mlumbi (Cape Town Cricket Club), Mihlali Mpongwana (University of the Western Cape Cricket Club), Jack Newby (University of Cape Town Cricket Club), Mpilo Njoloza (Brackenfell Cricket Club), Luke Philander (University of the Western Cape Cricket Club).
