Rondebosch Cricket Club abandoned Sunday, 16 February 2025’s Western Province Cricket Association premier league fixture against Ottoman Cricket Club after 32.5 overs.
Rondebosch Cricket Club, who had won the toss and opted to bat first, were 88 for five at the time of the abandonment at the Hassan Howa Oval, Ottoman Cricket Club.
“The pitch was unacceptable. It got consistently worse over time. Luckily, nobody got hurt,” Rondebosch Cricket Club captain Lenert van Wyk told Club Cricket SA.
“Head coach Sean Hendrieck made the decision for the safety of our players after multiple deliveries misbehaved.
“The WPCA local leagues committee will need to review the footage and come to a conclusion.”
Ottoman Cricket Club chairman Fareed Abrahams added: “We firmly believe that it is important for the necessary structures and processes to take their course in addressing the situation appropriately.
“In line with the WPCA processes, this matter is being referred to the necessary authorities, who will thoroughly investigate and resolve the issues at hand. We remain committed to supporting their efforts in ensuring the integrity of the game is upheld.”
Rondebosch Cricket Club and Ottoman Cricket Club were in fifth and sixth position, respectively, on the WPCA premier league points table ahead of Sunday’s fixture.
Rondebosch Cricket Club are the reigning WPCA premier league champions.
