Former Test cricketer Murray Goodwin has been charged with a level-four offence under Marylebone Cricket Club rules for “physically assaulting a player or any other person” during a club fixture in Australia recently.

Goodwin was playing for Colts Cricket Club against Marist Cricket Club in the Bendigo District Cricket Association first-grade grand final at the Bunbury Recreation Ground in Western Australia.

After being caught and bowled for two by Marist Cricket Club seamer Tyson Italiano, Goodwin allegedly swiped the bat at wicketkeeper Cam Marra.

Goodwin was later suspended for the remainder of the two-day fixture.

“The umpires notified both captains – Josh Topliss and Kyle Davis – prior to the start of play,” said BDCA umpire coordinator Gary Crombie.

“Due to the breaking of MCC law 42.5, and as a level four offence, the player – Goodwin – was not allowed on the field of play for the remainder of the match.”

Goodwin will soon face a tribunal, which will reportedly consider a suspension of up to three years.

Goodwin played for Zimbabwe in the Over-50 World Cup in South Africa earlier this month. He scored the tournament’s most runs – 377 in six innings – including two centuries.

He left the Over-50 World Cup early to return to Australia for the final.
