The 14-year-old Sofia Beires will debut for Westerford High School first XI against Fairmont High School in Cape Town, South Africa, on Saturday, 1 March 2025.

Beires, who is in grade nine at Westerford High School, has previously played for Western Province Under-16 Girls.

“I’ve always had an interest in cricket since young. I think I just had enough of netball and thought I’d give cricket a go, and it stuck.” Beires told Independent Media.

“I’ve watched cricket my whole life. My family always had cricket on the television and my uncle used to play cricket.

“I’ve opened the batting quite often for the Westerford under-15 and under-14 sides. And with a lot of players’ shuffles and everything, I think they saw that I could get an opportunity to play.

“I would like to try to see how far I could go. It would be amazing to play international cricket. But we’ll just see where it takes me, I guess, and just keep on working hard.”

Westerford High School director of sport Liam Dugmore added: “Sofia has always played boys cricket, She normally plays for the under-17 boys team and we felt that she deserved a call-up.

“She always goes out there to compete and doesn’t stand back to any of the boys.”

Former Proteas batsman Farhaan Behardien, who is currently head coach of Ottoman Cricket Club in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league, attended Westerford High School.
