Western Province have clarified batsman David Bedingham’s absence from the 19-man squad for this season’s T20 Challenge.

Bedingham was omitted from South Africa’s Test squad earlier this week, but not necessarily due to injury, according to head coach Shukri Conrad.

Western Province, however, have since stated: “David has been ruled out of the T20 Challenge with a right quadriceps muscle injury.

“He is currently progressing through his structured rehabilitation program under the supervision of the Cricket South Africa high performance team.”

Western Province’s T20 Challenge captain and Proteas team-mate Kyle Verreynne added: “David is a very good friend of mine and one of our best batters over the past two seasons. Unfortunately, he’s got a grade three hamstring tear and would’ve been out for eight weeks anyway.

“I don’t know why CSA haven’t made a statement yet on his injury. Once we get games in South Africa, it’s a no-brainer he’ll be back in the squad and starting XI. He’s a quality player and has many years left to contribute in the Test side.”

Western Province’s T20 campaign will start against North West at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday. WP are also without Jono Bird, who has a hamstring injury as well.
