University of Western Cape Cricket Club batsman Givon Christian has been named in Western Province’s squad for this week’s CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup fixture at Newlands.

Christian hasn’t played first-class cricket since 2012, but will end a six-year hiatus against Easterns in Cape Town on Thursday.

Prior to the move to UWC Cricket Club, the talented right-hander played for Pinelands Cricket Club, Primrose Cricket Club, Western Province Cricket Club, Montrose Cricket Club and United Cricket Club.

The 12-man squad features nine Western Province Cricket Association premier league players – and three from the first division A. Durbanville Cricket Club’s Andre Malan will captain the XI.

Former North West batsman Isaac Dikgale will debut for Western Province, while Tygerberg Cricket Club’s Carlos Koyana is the first-choice wicketkeeper.

Contracted by Western Province, but not named in this week’s squad are UWC Cricket Club leg-spinner Junaid Dawood and Wynberg Boys’ High School fast bowler Thando Ntini.

Western Province finished in second position in pool A of the 2017-18 Sunfoil 3-Day Cup, after five wins in 10 matches. The competition has since been renamed the CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup, after a loss of title sponsor earlier this year.

Squad: Qaasim Adams (United Cricket Club), Givon Christian (UWC Cricket Club), Michael Cohen (Western Province Cricket Club), Isaac Dikgale (Victoria Cricket Club), Justin Dill (Bellville Cricket Club), Matthew Kleinveldt (Milnerton Cricket Club), Carlos Koyana (Tygerberg Cricket Club), George Linde (Durbanville Cricket Club), Andre Malan (Durbanville Cricket Club), Neo Mlumbi (Cape Town Cricket Club), Jack Newby (University of Cape Town Cricket Club), Mpilo Njoloza (Brackenfell Cricket Club).
