Leg-spinner Josh Breed was named in Western Province’s XI for this week’s 4-Day Domestic Series fixture against the Tuskers in Pietermaritzburg.
This is Breed’s first first-class fixture. He was the joint fifth-highest wicket-taker – and most prolific wrist spinner – in this season’s T20 Challenge.
Fellow first-class debutants Kashief Joseph and Mbulelo Dube were also named in the WP XI to play the Tuskers.
Breed, Joseph and Dube represent Claremont Cricket Club, Rondebosch Cricket Club and Rylands Cricket Club, respectively, in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league.
Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne and batsman Jonathan Bird returned to the WP XI. This is Bird’s first first-class fixture since December 2024.
Seamer Mthiwekhaya Nabe and all-rounder Oliver Whitehead were named in the squad for this match, but not the playing XI. Whitehead will travel to Johannesburg with Western Province Cricket Club for the T20 Community Cup this week.
Western Province currently occupy sixth position on this season’s 4-Day Domestic Series, division one, points table. They have won one and lost three matches.
