Martin van der Merwe, William Hantam, Craig Herman win top WP Veterans awards

Durbanville Cricket Club batsman Martin van der Merwe was named 2024-25 Player of the Season at Wednesday’s Western Province Cricket Association awards event.

Van der Merwe is the fifth-highest run-scorer in this season’s WPVCA league with 393 in nine innings – and has taken 10 wickets.

Cape Town Cricket Club’s William Hantam was named WPVCA Batsman of the Season. Hantam is the highest run-scorer in this season’s WPVCA league with 469 in 10 innings.

Milnerton Cricket Club’s Craig Herman won the WPVCA Bowler of the Season award. Herman is the leading wicket-taker in this season’s WPVCA league with 24 in 10 innings.

Chairperson Fuzlin Levy-Hassen awarded Jamal Paleker and Meghann Leo for loyal service to the WPVCA, too.

Van der Merwe, Hantam and Herman have been named in Western Province Over-40’s squad for this month’s inter-provincial tournament. Western Province are the reigning over-40 IPT champions. They won the inaugural title in 2023.

Meanwhile, Durbanville Cricket Club Veterans and Primrose Cricket Club Veterans will contest Saturday’s WPVCA league final. This is reigning champions Primrose Cricket Club Veterans’ third successive final.

Claremont Cricket Club Veterans beat Primrose Cricket Club Veterans in the 2022-23 final.

Montrose Cricket Club Veterans won the 2021-22 title after beating Claremont Cricket Club Veterans in the final.

Pinelands Cricket Club Veterans won the inaugural WPVCA league title in 2020-21.
