WHY Anrich Nortje has not been given a CSA contract

Fast bowler Anrich Nortje has not been named among the Proteas’ contracted squad for the 2024-25 season.

Nortje has not played international cricket since September 2023 due to injury. He recently returned to competitive cricket with the Warriors in the T20 Challenge.

“Anrich requested he wants to focus on T20 cricket for the next few months. He is not retiring from any internationals. He will avail himself for T20 Internationals,” Cricket South Africa director of cricket Enoch Nkwe told ESPNcricinfo.

“Towards the end of the year, he will look to play ODIs again. We will be monitoring him and around to help him with whatever he needs.”

The contracted squad has been reduced from 20 to 18 players – and includes newcomers Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi. All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has returned.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Rickelton and spinner Bjorn Fortuin have been retained – and wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne has not been contracted.

“Our goal is to continue building strong and competitive teams that can consistently challenge on the global stage. With the addition of promising newcomers and the retention of experienced players, we believe we have assembled a squad capable of achieving success in the upcoming season,” added Nkwe.
