Cricket South Africa have confirmed the resignation of Proteas assistant coach Enoch Nkwe.

Nkwe resigned earlier this week and CSA have since formally accepted the decision.

“We regret to announce the decision by Enoch to leave his position as the assistant coach of the Proteas men’s team,” read a statement from CSA.

“The board engaged with Enoch to explore whether there was a way to retain his services, but this was unsuccessful.

“During these discussions, he also raised concerns about the functioning and culture of the team environment.

“The board will be taking the necessary steps to investigate and address the issues raised by Enoch.”

“While every effort was made to retain his services, Enoch has decided to focus on personal growth and professional development.

“This affords him the opportunity to return to the system in the future with a better sense of himself and being certain of the direction of his career.

“He has emphasised his unwavering commitment to SA cricket and especially the men’s team as they embark on a key tour to Sri Lanka in preparation for the T20 World Cup in October.”

Who will replace Enoch Nkwe?

Cricket South Africa, meanwhile, have mandated acting chief executive officer Pholetsi Moseki to oversee the urgent process of replacing Nkwe.

“It is deeply disappointing to lose someone of Enoch’s calibre at this time, but we fully understand and respect his decision,” added CSA board chairperson Lawson Naidoo.

We are comforted by the fact that he remains committed to SA cricket, and hope that he will be back serving the game that we all love.

“He has been and continues to be an inspiration to young cricketers and coaches.”

Nkwe’s coaching credentials

Nkwe had been South Africa’s interim team director in 2019. He later moved to assistant coach on a full-time basis.

He missed the tour of the West Indies earlier this year. Titans head coach Mandla Mashimbyi, instead, assisted head coach Mark Boucher.

Previously, Nkwe had been assistant coach of the Netherlands – and performed the same role for the Vancouver Knights in the Global T20 Canada.

He won titles as the head coach of the Lions – and led the Jozi Stars to the inaugural Mzansi Super League trophy.
