Former Wynberg Cricket Club head coach Marcus Oliphant has outlined some of the reasoning for this week’s resignation.
Oliphant was appointed at Wynberg Cricket Club in 2018. His tenure coincided with coaching roles at Wynberg Boys’ High School and within the Cape Premier League.
“I felt it is the right time to step away from the club. I want to contribute to the cricket community in a broader sense, in terms of development,” Oliphant told Club Cricket SA.
“I want to run more mental skills clinics and more fitness clinics – trying to take care of people’s preparation and sharing my knowledge more.
“I think being tied to one club restricts you in that sense. I want to work in the development space at schools and make sure that the nexts generation is coming through with the right attitude, temperament and technical skills.
“Wynberg Cricket Club are in a good place to move forward. I want to be able to expand on what I can give to the wider cricket community.
“My focus from here on in will be on my brand MYM Coaching, to contribute to cricket as a whole and continue to be in school cricket development with Wynberg Boys’ High.”
Wynberg Cricket Club, meanwhile, have advertised the vacant head coach post. They want to appoint Oliphant’s successor for the 2023-24 season.

“We wish to thank Marcus for his dedication and commitment to Wynberg, and for the strong foundation that he has imparted at the club,” said Wynberg Cricket Club chairman Donovan Koen.
“He has helped us develop and put the right structures in place to develop even further, as a club and individuals.”
Wynberg Cricket Club have been promoted to the 2023-24 Western Province Cricket Association first division B after winning the 2022-23 first division C. They are the reigning Ama20 Competition first division C champions.
