All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has not been included in South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Fellow all-rounder Wiaan Mulder was preferred to Phehlukwayo, according to Proteas limited-overs coach Rob Walter.
“Wiaan gives more with the bat as an all-rounder than Andile,” said Walter.
“The squad covers all bases. It’s much like in India in 2023, where we understood there would be a variety of conditions. The general information we have is that there’s not a lot of spin and the pitches are good for batting – so the batters are excited.”
This year’s Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from 19 February to 9 March.
South Africa have been pooled with England, Australia and Afghanistan.
“I’m very excited to have this group together and to see what they can do at this tournament. The guys know what it feels like to be in the cauldron, that’s my main takeaway from the last two world events. Winning a trophy is not far away,” concluded Walter.
The Proteas won the Champions Trophy title in 1998 – and were losing semi-finalists in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2013.
