Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has not been included in South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Fellow fast bowler Anrich Nortje was preferred to Coetzee, according to Proteas limited-overs coach Rob Walter.
“They both offer high pace, but Anrich has a little bit more experience and potentially some attributes that will stand us in good stead in Pakistan,” said Walter.
“Gerald was a tough one because he’s ultimately done nothing wrong to not be selected.”
Nortje has not played international cricket since June 2024. He had been sidelined by a broken toe, but has since recovered. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who has been recovering from a groin injury, has also been named in South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad.
“Anrich is an ultimate professional. He looks after himself, takes care of his conditioning. From my side, I trust him and trust that he’ll be ready to go,” added Walter.
This year’s Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from 19 February to 9 March.
South Africa have been pooled with England, Australia and Afghanistan.
The tournament has not been played since 2017. Pakistan are the reigning champions.
Australia and India are the most successful Champions Trophy teams with two titles each.
The Proteas won the Champions Trophy title in 1998 – and were losing semi-finalists in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2013.
The West Indies and Sri Lanka did not qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
