Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder recorded the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket on Monday, 7 July 2025.
Mulder’s 367 not out on day two of this week’s second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo surpassed the previous highest individual Test score by a South African – batsman Hashim Amla’s 311 not out against England at The Oval in 2012.
“This is a proud moment for Wiaan, the Proteas Men, and the entire South African cricket fraternity,” said Cricket South Africa director of national teams and high performance Enoch Nkwe.
“It was a truly world-class performance that will be remembered for generations. Records like this are not just personal milestones; they inspire young cricketers and elevate the stature of our game.”
Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad added: “Wiaan’s innings was nothing short of extraordinary. Being the captain, then batting at number three where had to absorb early pressure and face the new ball, which he did with immense composure and control – it was unbelievable.
“The way he constructed his innings, session by session, was a masterclass in temperament and shot selection. It’s the kind of performance that anchors a team and sets the tone for the entire match. We’re incredibly proud of what he’s achieved.”
Captaining the XI in the absence of the injured Keshav Maharaj and Temba Bavuma, Mulder declared the innings at the lunch break on Monday.
The declaration stopped Mulder from pursuing the highest individual score in the history of Test cricket. The West Indies’ Brian Lara has the highest – 400 not out against England in St John’s in 2004.
“Firstly, I thought we had enough and we needed to bowl,” said Mulder.
“Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend. For someone of that stature to keep that record is deserved. If I get the chance to do it again, I’d do it exactly the same way. I spoke to Shukri Conrad and he felt the same way.
“Brian Lara is a legend and he deserves to keep that record.”
