Captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the Proteas’ third and final ODI against Ireland in the United Arab Emirates on Monday.
Bavuma has been sidelined by an elbow injury. Batsman Rassie van der Dussen will captain South Africa in Bavuma’s absence.
“Bavuma will return home with the rest of the squad on Tuesday and will consult a specialist. An update on the extent of his injury will be provided in due course,” read a statement from CSA.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder won’t be available for selection, too. He has returned to South Africa “due to personal reasons,” according to Cricket South Africa.
South Africa will also be without fast bowler Nandre Burger, who has been sidelined by a back injury.
Batsman Reeza Hendricks has been added to the squad. He will arrive in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
The Proteas have an unassailable two-nil lead in the three-match series.
